Britney Spears: You don't go for singing, you go for the show
You don’t go to a Britney Spears concert for the singing. It’s the same reason you don’t buy her music. You go to her shows and buy her albums because she is Britney Spears. And Britney Spears delivered a second phenomenal show on Thursday night at the Air Canada Centre.
It is important to note that when buying a ticket to see the blonde bombshell live, you are purchasing a seat to witness a spectacle more than a concert. With that mindset, Thursday’s audience could not have been disappointed with the literal and figurative “Circus” that Britney brought north of the border with. It featured Perez Hilton in drag, (on video), many circus acrobats, and the sizzle of many sexy dancers, synonymous with any Spears performance. Undoubtedly paying homage to the circus her life has become, the concert’s theme certainly was a good one as the carnival acts made up for any legs in the two-hour show and especially during Britney’s costume changes. The three-ring stage was a nice touch.
On Thursday, reviewer Mike Doherty said that Britney’s dances on Wednesday lacked the energy that she has displayed in past performances. Perhaps it was the earlier start time, but she definitely sizzled on Thursday’s show.
Really, the show came down to whether the more-than-obvious lip synching bothered you or not. Considering the majority of the audience included young teeny-boppers screaming loudly and more focused on taking photos to send to friends than the music they paid to see, this was definitely not a factor. It was the same case for the horny guys in attendance who were only there to see the leggy blonde rather than to listen to “If You Seek Amy.” As a result, the highly-entertaining show totally delivered.
Notable highlights including Britney actually belting out “Everytime” instead of the Milli Vanilli routine, an inspired Bollywood version of “Me Against The Music” (which was almost as good as seeing Madonna… I kid), and the many precarious positions that Britney found herself gyrating in, obviously including a cage (duh), a wire fence and even a magician’s box where she proceeded to mock-strip behind the curtains.
While I thought it would be a shock to see “Britney The Mom” perform for the first time, it really wasn’t, as her show was just as good as it was a couple of years ago. While many critics like to pigeonhole Spears and all pop artists being prepackaged, Spears has been able to reinvent herself over and over again. While no one expected her to able to recover from the awful VMA performance, she was able to and while she still has a long way to go before recapturing past success, if her “Circus” is any indication, she is on the right path.
You want a piece of her? Go and see this show.
